Durban Winners

After being selected with this project for the event that happens alongside the Durban International Film Festival she met a lot of interest for this project by industry players and funders and the award was just the icing on the cake. The Durban FilmMart (DFM) is a finance and co-production market which aims to create partnerships and further the development and production of film on the African continent. It’s a co-production between the film industry development arm of the city of Durban and the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), South Africa’s largest and longest-running film festival and a flagship project of the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal). The finance and co-production forum of DFM had this year 10 features and nine documentary films selected for intense mentoring and pitch sessions to financiers and distributors, and other industry representatives.

This year the awards ceremony was held at the Tsogo Maharani Hotel in Durban, South Africa.“DFM is considered one of Africa’s most important film finance platforms and industry gatherings, and this year around 550 film-makers from around the globe, with a significant representation from Africa, attended the festival for four days of pitching, forums and networking sessions,” says Toni Monty, Head of the Durban Film Office. “Over 600 meetings were held, in a robust and very engaging event this year.”

A number of grants and awards were provided to projects with the aim to support their further development. As part of the award the publicity consultants Versfeld and Associates will develop publicity material and advise on publicity profiling for the awarded project Inga, Inge by Tsitsi Dangarembga, Zimbabwe.
“It is through these partnerships that DFM projects are able to develop further along the path to completion, so we would like to thank all our partners for their support,” says Toni Monty.
